What is FSSAI registration & which one do you need?
The essentials in under a minute — so you apply under the right category the first time.
Check my requirementWhat FSSAI registration really is
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India regulates every food business in the country. Depending on your turnover and scale, you either take a Basic registration or a State or Central licence, and you receive a 14-digit FSSAI number that must be displayed on your premises and your packaging.
Which category applies to you
Basic registration — petty food businesses with turnover up to ₹12 lakh a year. State licence — turnover above ₹12 lakh and up to ₹20 crore, operating within one state. Central licence — turnover above ₹20 crore, importers, exporters, e-commerce and multi-state operators. Cloud kitchens, home bakers and food influencers selling products all need one too.
How long it takes
A Basic registration is often issued within about 7 to 10 working days. State and Central licences usually take about 30 to 60 days, since the department may seek clarifications or inspect the premises.
What it costs
The government fee is ₹100 per year for Basic registration, and typically ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 per year for a State licence and ₹7,500 per year for a Central licence, depending on category. Professional fees at one-startup start from ₹1,499.
Simple pricing, zero surprises
No confusing packages — just clear professional fees for expert help. Government fee is charged separately at actuals:

Selecting multiple fee years increases our fee proportionately. It does not define licence validity. Annual returns, testing, technical reports, inspections and ongoing compliance are not included.
Why getting your FSSAI category right actually matters?
It keeps you legally trading, lets you list on delivery platforms and marketplaces, and protects you from penalties that can dwarf the licence fee itself.
An FSSAI number is a licence to trade in food. Done right, it lets you:
Done wrong — the wrong category, an understated turnover or a missing category of operation — and your licence is suspended or you are forced to reapply. That is exactly why we check the category before filing.
What you'll need to apply
Exact documents depend on your category and scale — we send a custom checklist for your case.

Premises proof
Rent agreement or ownership document, plus a utility bill for the food business premises.

Incorporation certificate, partnership deed, GST certificate or Udyam registration, as applicable.
Layout & equipment list
A processing unit plan and list of machinery, required for State and Central licence applications.

Display the licence
The certificate must be displayed prominently at the premises and the number printed on labels.
Annual return (Form D1)
Manufacturers and importers file an annual return by 31 May each year.
Half-yearly return (D2)
Applicable to milk and milk-product businesses.
Renewal
Licences must be renewed before expiry — applications open 30 to 180 days ahead.
Simple rule: renew before expiry, display the number everywhere, and file returns if your category requires them.
Beyond the licence — all your food compliance needs in one place
A food business needs more than a certificate. Our team also helps with:
Whatever your question, we'll give you a clear, plain-English answer.

Choosing Basic when you needed State, or missing a product category, is the most common and most expensive FSSAI mistake. We check that before anything is filed.

What's changed in 2026 — and why it's easier to get wrong
FoSCoS has made applications faster, but enforcement on labelling, e-commerce and renewals has tightened sharply.
Everything runs through FoSCoS
The unified FoSCoS portal now handles registration, licensing, modification and renewal in one place.
E-commerce sellers are squarely covered
Food businesses selling through online platforms generally need a Central licence, regardless of how small the operation looks.
Labelling rules are enforced harder
The FSSAI logo, licence number, and mandatory declarations on packaging are checked actively, both offline and on marketplaces.
Renewal windows are strict
Renewal must be applied for before expiry. Late renewal attracts a daily penalty and lapsed licences may require a fresh application.
Getting an FSSAI number is quick. Getting the right category, the right licence tier and the right label is where food businesses lose time and money. That is exactly where a review-before-filing service pays for itself.
